Khlebnikov, a U.S. citizen of Russian origin who was noted for having criticized exiled magnate Boris Berezovsky, had worked since 1989 for Forbes, which tracks the world's wealthy. He was the latest victim of killings that have struck down officials, businessmen and journalists in post-Soviet Russia.

Three Moods for woodwind quintet (2002)

Download mp3 recording:
I. Void (MP3, 2''16', 2.1MB)
II. Sadness (MP3, 5''22', 5.0MB)
III. Frivolity (MP3, 3''37', 3.4MB)

Performed by: Russian National Orchestra Woodwind Quintet

"Three Moods" was created in 2002, soon after Andrey Rubtsov joined the Russian National Orchestra Wind Quintet. The composition was heavily influenced by Rubtsov's in-depth knowledge of a broad repertoire of works for quintets and became, probably, the most successful work of composer.

Besides many performances by RNO wind quintet in Russia, Spain, USA, in Bermuda (Bermuda music festival) it was included in concert programms of 16 other wind ensembles who performed it in Brasil (Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet), Russia, China, Lithuania, England (Gallimaufry ensemble, Bellavente Wind Quintet), Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria (Adi's Quintet), Spain (Ciudad de Soria), Venezuela (Ad Libitum quintet), Morocco (Arirang-Quintett), and California (GreatNotes, Vent au Rogue).

The three movements outline three different approaches to the quintet as an ensemble. The first, "Void," consists of separate patches of sound, which seem to come from far away and are divided by long breaths. The second movement is "Sadness" in which the large-scale solos and dense instrumentation make reference to romantic compositions. The final movement "Frivolity" is a scherzo in the spirit of Piazzolla, in which each instrument expresses delight.

“Frivolity” inspired Bermudean choreographer Conchita Ming to create a dance for three performers for Bermuda Festival 2003. "Three Moods" has been recorded by PentaToneClassics for release on a forthcoming CD featuring the Russian National Orchestra Wind Quintet.

"Three Moods" has been published by TrevCo Music publishing house.

"I must say, that these are one of the greatest recording I've heard for some time. The quintet is also astonishing..."

Waltz for piano and string quartet (2001)

Download mp3 recording:
Waltz (MP3, 11''49', 11.0MB)
Performed by: Anna Timofeeva, Elizaveta Rybintseva, Elina Hachatryan, Denis Zhdanov, Tatiana Kolesova.

Piano Quintet was commissioned for the concert in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory (main Russian concert hall) in spring of 2001.

Powerful begining preparing the slow development of the main theme. String instruments enter one after another - first violin, then second, viola, and, finally, cello with the recapitulation of the waltz theme.

Second section is the vigorous fuga on the material of introduction. Climax provided by Waltz theme with all four string instruments in unison. After another calm place brilliant Coda recalls the fuga section.

"All I have to say is WOW... That is so very Awesome!"

Piano sonata (2001)

Download mp3 recording:
Sonata (MP3, 11''58', 14.0MB)
Performed by: Evgeny Starodubzev

Big one-movement sonata in Romantic traditions.

Slow bells-like sounding introduction will serve the major material for all transitions. Main challenging scherzo brings us to the slow and calm middle section Molto moderato con amore.

Climax of this theme returns the introduction bells motif and, through small cadenza move to the recapitulation of the scherzo. Coda with Presto possible provides striking ending of the whole piece.

"This piece is very very well written - my congratulations to the composer in acieving an amazing effect. Has some elements of ravel and maybe rachmaninoff in there, but all brought together with the fireworks of a lisztian technique. The piece is also decidedly modern as there are unexpected shifts between very romantic harmonious and chordal passages with more abbrasive sections. A masterpiece if i ever heard one!!"

Marbella Fantasy for Flute, Oboe & Piano (2004) - 8''

Download mp3 recording:

Marbella Fantasy (MP3, 8''33', 12.1MB)
Performed by: Maxim Rubtsov (Flute), Andrey Rubtsov (Oboe), Vyacheslav Gryaznov (Piano)

Marbella Fantasy was performed first in Marbella, Spain in August 04. This piece is a special gift to flutist's Max Rubtsov wedding. Two Rubtsovs - Andrey and Maxim (not brothers, but good friends in life and in music collaboration) often play together and they were always in need of piece that can clearly show different sides of their performance abilities.

This piece has big cadenzas, slow section with cantilena and main allegro section with crazy (in a good way) passages and time changes.

Marbella fantasy has received its U.S. premiere when Allegresse performed it as part of a recital Sunday at Grace Episcopal Cathedral (Flutist Annie Gnojek, oboist Margaret Marco and pianist Ellen Bottorff). Later second performance took place at Swarthout Recital Hall, Lawrence, Kansas.

Performance has been aired. Kansas Public Radio says: "Some of the most beautiful music written for these instruments ever. Shows a complete understanding of the instruments."
