Andrey Rubtsov was born in Moscow in 1982. In 2005, he graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire as an oboist and in 2008 as a conductor, both times with honours. In the same year, he started studying on the Postgraduate Course in Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London under the tuition of Professor Colin Metters.
In 2001, he joined the Russian National Orchestra under Mikhail Plentev as an Associate Principal and became the youngest artist ever in the history of RNO. The same year, he became a founding member of the RNO Wind Quintet one of the leading Russian wind ensembles, regularly touring countries worldwide such as Spain, USA, Great Britain, Singapore and Malaysia. The RNO Wind Quintet is the first prizewinner of the 5th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition (May 2005).
In February 2009, Decca Classics released a recording of Bach Concertos with the violinist, Julia Fischer and the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, featuring Andrey in the Double Concerto for Violin and Oboe.
Andrey also devotes much of his time to composition. His pieces have been performed in Russia, Ukraine, China, USA, Switzerland, Spain, Lithuania, France, Poland, Hungary, England, Bulgaria, Singapore, Venezuela, Morocco, Brazil, Malaysia and Bermuda. He composed a chamber ballet for the Bolshoi Theatre and his woodwind quintet has become a standard repertoire piece for already more than nineteen quintets all over the world including the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet.
Andrey made his conducting debut in 2004. He conducted two piano concertos by J.S. Bach with Mikhail Pletnev as a soloist. This was followed by concerts in Malaysia (2005), USA (2006), Russia and Netherlands (2008).
In 2006, Andrey recorded the world premier of Gustav Mahler’s songs, which were orchestrated by the renowned Russian composer, Boris Tishchenko and several poems by contemporary composer Alexander Lokshin.

- composition marked with poetry and inspiration and reveales appropriate
continuity with national classic."

Rubtsov captured the music's tragic poignancy."

article
"A good oboist is a keystone to success of every
concert. In case of Andrey the orchestra found not only a brilliant
oboist but also a great organizer - Andrey leads the RNO Chamber
ensemble."
(Vogue Russia, №2 2005)
"Perhaps the only really outstanding moment
proved to be the oboe solo (Bravo, Andrey Rubtsov!) from the box
of a distant amphitheatre."
("Nezavisimaya gazeta", 11-02-2003)
"From time to time Mikhail Vasilievich appears
to forget about the orchestra, but that was only an illusion - piano
and the accompaniment felt each other so deeply that sounded really
like a single instrument. Last season Pletnev has performed Mozart's
concerto conducting right from his piano seat, this time conductor's
stand was given to Andrey Rubtsov."
("Gazeta", 23.09.2004)
(From James Levine's interview
to "Kultura" newspaper, #4, 2003.)
"- There are a lot of musicians
from Russia in Verbier Festival Orchestra. What's so interesting
about them for You?
- Everything! They are tremendous:
passionate playing and good skills. I feel a creative ability and
an enthusiasm. There are 12 musicians from Russia in our orchestra.
One of them, Andrey Rubtsov, is not only an oboist but also a composer.
Specially for him I've invited soloist from MET as a coach, they
are both so young."
"Andrey Rubtsov brings its fine oboe culture in the C minor Concerto with self-confidence. It becomes warm in the heart."
(Badische Zeitung. February 17, 2009)
"Andrey Rubtsov sustains the music with eloquent inflexions and a feeling for dialogue."
(BBC Music Magazine. April 2009)
